State rules vary — check before you charge

Late-fee rules are not the same everywhere. Many states cap how large a late fee can be (sometimes as a flat dollar limit, sometimes as a percentage of the rent), and many require a minimum grace period before any fee can be charged. Some states also restrict per-day or compounding fees.

This calculator does the math you tell it to do — it does not know your state's limits and does not enforce any cap. Before applying a late fee, check your state and local statutes and the language in your signed lease. A fee that exceeds your state's cap, or one charged before a required grace period, may be unenforceable.
